If the thought of packing up your brand-new baby, approximately 47 nappies, spare clothes, feeds, dummies and half your house for a photoshoot sounds like the absolute last thing you want to do after giving birth… I have good news.
You don’t have to.

Lifestyle newborn photography takes place in the comfort of your own home and is one of my favourite ways to photograph those first few weeks with a new baby.

Rather than focusing on perfectly posed newborn images and studio setups, an in-home lifestyle newborn session is about capturing what this little chapter of your life actually feels like.

Baby curled up against Mum. Tiny fingers wrapped around Dad’s hand. Snuggles on your bed. Big brother or sister peeking into the cot. Feeding, cuddling, yawning, stretching and all those ridiculously tiny newborn details that change far too quickly.

And the best part?

Your home — the place your baby first came home to — becomes part of the story.

As a Canberra newborn photographer, I offer both lifestyle newborn photography in your home and posed newborn photography in my home studio in Franklin. They’re both beautiful, but they create very different galleries.

So if you’re trying to decide which style is right for your family, here is pretty much everything you need to know about lifestyle newborn photography.

What is lifestyle newborn photography?

Lifestyle newborn photography is a relaxed, natural style of newborn photography that takes place in your own home.

Think less “photoshoot” and more “a really beautiful version of a morning at home with your new baby.”

I’ll still give you plenty of direction – because nobody wants to stand in their bedroom holding a baby wondering, “Okay… what do I do with my hands?” – but the session isn’t heavily posed.

I might ask you to sit together on the bed, cuddle your baby near a window, stand beside the cot or have Dad hold baby while Mum snuggles in.

From there, I’m looking for the little moments that naturally happen between you.

I’ll also photograph all those newborn details: tiny hands, toes, eyelashes, little stretches, sleepy faces and the way your baby fits perfectly into your arms right now.

The result is a gallery that feels natural, warm and personal to your family.

Why I love in-home newborn sessions so much

There is something extra special about photographing a baby in the home they have just arrived in.

You’ve probably spent months getting their nursery ready. Their bassinet is beside your bed. There might be cards from family sitting on the dresser, a favourite blanket draped over the cot or a very proud furry sibling who hasn’t quite worked out what this noisy new housemate is yet.

These things might feel completely ordinary right now.

But in ten or twenty years?

They won’t be.

Your home is part of your family’s history.

Lifestyle newborn photography preserves more than what your baby looked like. It captures a little piece of what your life looked and felt like when they first came home.

And I absolutely love that.

Who is a lifestyle newborn session perfect for?

Lifestyle newborn photography is a great choice if you:

  • Love natural, relaxed and emotive photographs.
  • Want your home or baby’s nursery included in your images.
  • Don’t particularly love heavily posed newborn photography.
  • Want lots of photographs of your baby interacting with you.
  • Have older siblings you’d love to include naturally.
  • Want your dog or other pets included in some photographs.
  • Don’t want the stress of leaving home with a newborn.
  • Have a baby who is already a few weeks old.
  • Love photographs that feel like your family rather than a styled studio setup.

It’s also a really lovely option for first-time parents.

Those early days at home together are such a strange little bubble. You’re learning your baby, figuring out your new routine and probably operating on significantly less sleep than you thought was humanly possible.

That’s exactly the chapter we’re capturing.

Lifestyle newborn photography vs studio newborn photography

This is probably the question I get asked most often.

And neither option is “better” – they’re just different.

My studio newborn sessions in Franklin are more posed and styled. I provide wraps, outfits and simple props, and the focus is on creating beautiful, carefully posed photographs of your baby as well as photographs with parents and siblings.

Studio sessions are ideal if you love those sleepy, curled-up newborn photographs and want a more polished, minimalist look.
Lifestyle newborn sessions are much more natural.

I come to your home and photograph your family within your own environment. We might use your master bedroom, nursery and living room, depending on your home and where the best natural light is.

There is less emphasis on baby being asleep and more emphasis on connection.

There will still be gorgeous photographs of your baby on their own, but instead of creating lots of traditional newborn poses, I photograph them more naturally – wrapped up, lying on your bed, in their cot, in your arms or wherever works beautifully within your home.

If you’re drawn to beautiful posed newborn portraits, my studio session is probably going to suit you.

If you’re drawn to images that make you feel something and instantly take you back to those first days at home, lifestyle might be your thing.

And if you’re still unsure, just ask me. I’m always happy to help you work out which session will suit you best.

Does my house need to look like it belongs in a magazine?

Absolutely not.

This is probably the biggest concern people have about booking an in-home newborn photography session.
Please do not look around your house two weeks after giving birth and think you need to start deep cleaning for me.

You have a newborn.

I expect your house to look like people live there.

I don’t need your entire home to be perfectly styled or spotless, either. Usually we only photograph in two or three areas of the house.

When I arrive, I’ll have a quick look around and work out where we have the nicest light and backgrounds. Often that’s the master bedroom, baby’s nursery and living room.

We can quickly move anything distracting from the areas we’re photographing.

Laundry basket in the corner? Move it.

Water bottle on the bedside table? Gone.

Random breast pump parts everywhere? We’ve all been there.

You definitely do not need a huge designer home to have beautiful lifestyle newborn photographs.

Good natural light and a little uncluttered space can go a very long way.

What if my home is dark?

Don’t panic about this either.

Part of my job is finding the best light available in your home.

Before your session I’ll usually ask you a little about your home and your windows, and when I arrive I’ll look around to see which spaces are going to photograph best.

Sometimes the room you expect us to use isn’t actually the best one.

You might have created the most beautiful nursery imaginable, but if the light is gorgeous in your bedroom, we may spend more time there instead.

I’m always looking at your home from a photographer’s perspective – particularly the direction, quality and softness of the available light.

When should we have our lifestyle newborn photos taken?

For lifestyle newborn photography, timing is much more flexible than it is for traditional posed newborn photography.
My favourite window is generally from around 6 days to 3 weeks old.

At this age they’re still beautifully tiny and very much in that newborn stage, but unlike a posed studio session, your baby does not need to stay asleep for me to photograph them.

If they’re awake?

Perfect.

If they’re asleep?

Also perfect.

If they decide halfway through that they’re absolutely starving despite eating seventeen minutes ago?

Also very newborn.

We stop, you feed them, and we continue when they’re ready.

If your baby is already older than three weeks, please don’t assume you’ve missed out. Lifestyle newborn photography works beautifully with older newborns and young babies too.

What time are lifestyle newborn sessions?

I generally prefer to photograph newborn sessions in the morning, usually starting around 10:30am.

Babies and older siblings are often happier earlier in the day, and morning light tends to work beautifully indoors.
However, every home is different.

Because lifestyle photography relies heavily on your home’s available light, we can discuss what your house is like and work out the best option for your session.

What should we wear for an in-home newborn session?

Keep it simple.

My photography style is natural and neutral, and clothing that follows the same approach tends to photograph beautifully.
Think:

Creams, whites, beige, oatmeal, soft grey, muted blues, dusty pinks and other soft neutral tones.

Rather than everyone wearing exactly the same colour, choose colours that complement each other.

For Mum, a simple flowing dress, knit, blouse or neutral top with jeans can all work beautifully. Most importantly, wear something you feel comfortable and good in.

For Dad, a simple neutral T-shirt, knit, linen shirt or button-up works well.

For siblings, again, simple is best.

I’d generally avoid large logos, neon colours, very bold patterns and anything that is going to pull attention away from your baby and your family.

And don’t worry — I’m happy to help you with wardrobe choices before your session.

What should baby wear?

You don’t need to go shopping for a miniature three-piece suit.

Simple photographs best.

A plain white or neutral onesie can be gorgeous. So can a simple knitted romper or just baby wrapped in one of my wraps.
I bring newborn wraps and some newborn outfits with me, so we can use a mixture depending on what suits your home and the style of photographs we’re creating.

If you have something sentimental you’d love included – perhaps a blanket knitted by Grandma or something special that was yours as a baby – absolutely tell me.

Those personal touches are perfect for lifestyle sessions.

How should we prepare our home?

Very minimally!

Before I arrive, I recommend opening your blinds and curtains to let in as much natural light as possible.
Give the bedside tables and obvious surfaces in your bedroom, nursery and living area a quick declutter.

That’s about it.

Please don’t spend the day before your session frantically cleaning your entire house.

I promise I am not photographing your skirting boards.

If we need to move something while I’m there, we will.

It can also help to keep the house comfortably warm, particularly if we plan to photograph baby in a simple onesie, wrapped loosely or with little arms and feet exposed.

Should I feed my baby before the session?

If the timing works out, a nice full feed before we start can be helpful.

But please don’t stress about trying to manipulate your baby’s routine for the photoshoot.

Lifestyle sessions are deliberately relaxed.

If baby needs feeding halfway through, we stop.

If baby needs changing, we stop.

If baby needs cuddling, we cuddle them.

In fact, if you’re comfortable with it, feeding your baby can create some absolutely beautiful photographs too.
The session works around your baby – not the other way around.

What if my baby won’t sleep?

Then we photograph them awake!

This is one of my favourite things about lifestyle newborn photography.

There isn’t the same pressure for baby to be deeply asleep because we’re not trying to achieve lots of complicated newborn poses.
Awake newborn photographs can be absolutely gorgeous.

Those little eyes looking up at Mum and Dad, stretches, yawns and funny newborn expressions are all part of the story.
So please don’t spend your session worrying that your baby is “not behaving.”

They’re a newborn.

There are no behaviour expectations here.

Can siblings be included?

Absolutely.

In fact, lifestyle newborn photography is fantastic when there are older siblings.

Being at home means they’re in their own environment and can come in and out of photographs rather than feeling like they have to sit still for an entire photoshoot.

We’ll get the important sibling photographs, but I also love capturing the less-perfect moments.

Peeking into the cot.

Giving baby a kiss.

Snuggling Mum while she’s holding baby.

Showing me their bedroom or favourite toy.

Those little interactions are often the photographs parents end up loving most.

Can our dog be in the photos?

Yes!

If they’re part of your family, they’re part of your story.

Having the session at home can make including pets much easier because they’re already somewhere familiar.

Obviously we’ll always put baby’s safety first and work around your pet’s temperament, but I’m very happy to include your furry family members where appropriate.

Do you pose us at all?

Yes — but probably not in the way you’re imagining.

Lifestyle doesn’t mean I arrive at your house and silently stalk you with a camera for two hours.

I will guide you.

I’ll tell you where the light is best, where to stand or sit and give you little prompts so you know what to do.
But instead of trying to create stiff poses where everyone looks at the camera and smiles, I’m usually encouraging interaction.
Look at your baby.

Snuggle closer.

Give them a kiss.

Talk to your toddler.

Hold baby’s little hand.

That gives us photographs that are flattering and beautifully composed while still feeling natural.

And yes, we’ll usually get a few looking-at-the-camera family photographs too. Grandparents tend to appreciate those ones.

How is baby photographed on their own?

Even though lifestyle sessions focus heavily on family connection, I still make sure we capture plenty of your baby.

Depending on your home, I might photograph baby lying safely on your bed, wrapped in their cot or bassinet, snuggled into a simple setup, or in another naturally beautiful area of your home.

I’ll also capture close-up details – their eyelashes, lips, fingers, toes and all those tiny newborn features you swear you’ll remember forever but somehow change before you even realise it.

What if my baby cries?

They probably will at some point.

And that’s completely fine.

Newborn sessions aren’t a test you or your baby need to pass.

We’ll take our time.

We can feed, cuddle, change, wrap or settle baby whenever needed.

I’ve been photographing babies and families for more than a decade, so a crying baby isn’t going to scare me away.

Do you bring anything with you?

Yes.

Although lifestyle sessions use your home as the main setting, I can bring a selection of simple wraps and newborn outfits with me.
My style is very natural and neutral, so I don’t bring huge elaborate sets or lots of themed props into your home.

The whole point is that your family and your home are the story.

What areas do you travel to for lifestyle newborn photography?

I’m based in Franklin in Canberra’s Gungahlin region and offer in-home lifestyle newborn photography throughout Canberra and surrounding areas.

That includes families across Gungahlin, Belconnen, Inner North, Inner South, Woden, Weston Creek, Molonglo Valley and Tuggeranong, as well as Queanbeyan and Googong.

If you’re outside these areas, feel free to get in touch and ask.

Lifestyle newborn photography in Canberra – is it right for you?

If you want perfectly posed, sleepy newborn portraits with beautiful simple styling, I’d recommend having a look at my studio newborn sessions.

But if you want photographs of your baby in the home they first came home to…

If you want to remember their nursery, those first cuddles on your bed, their tiny body against Dad’s chest and their big brother or sister proudly showing them off…

Lifestyle newborn photography might be exactly what you’re looking for.

These aren’t just photographs of what your baby looked like.

They’re photographs of what becoming a family — or becoming a family of four, five or more — actually felt like.

And years from now, I think that context becomes incredibly special.
